In The Tagger, Trevor is arrested by Jake and Holt after being caught vandalizing police cars by painting penises on them. "The Tagger" was a pretty good step in that direction.Michael Grant Trevor Podolski is the spoiled, condescending and callous son of Deputy Commissioner Podolski. As we move forward, the hope is that the jokes get stronger as the relationships crystallize. We get that Diaz cares for Boyle, Boyle's sweet nature is highlighted, and Peretti's afforded an opportunity to be both troublesome and weird. Again, it was all about tough love, destiny and captaining of your own ship/mastering of your own souling as Peretti, with the aid of her Miss Cleo friend - and without any real warm and fuzzy intent - attempted to snap Boyle out of his puppy love for Diaz, and Diaz, in turn, literally smacked him out of the palm-reading shoe-devil's clutches. The support cast continues to more than pull their own weight, and the writers are finding a way to give each of them their due while maintaining a sense of cohesion. No connection there, I just like that touch. Both the pilot and "The Tagger" offered up some highly quotable lines. Brooklyn Nine-Nine doesn't yet qualify as gut-bustingly hilarious, but the potential is there and growing. The most important thing is that we're laughing, though, and the episode got increasingly funny as it went along. It's a tricky formula, certainly, and while the show hasn't nailed it yet, they do seem to be finding their way. We'll want to see progression week to week, but it's got to feel like a natural one. Having said that, we don't want to spend too much time retreading the same story territory, which the early portion of the episode slipped into, with Holt's repeated "I didn't work this hard to." speech which echoed last week's "I didn't work this hard to." speech and a similar flashback to the previous CO. Speaking of which, did it feel a little rushed that they're already at the guiding dad figure and talented - but legitimately disguising - boy stage of their bromance? Perhaps a bit. Maybe there's hope for Holt's boy after all! Baby steps, though. When forced to decide for himself, which is what any good parent would have their child do, the detective came through. The douchebag, power-abusing, neglectful dad raising his equally smarmy, desperate-for-boundaries son was an ideal counter to Holt's ironclad integrity and Peralta's reluctant willingness to follow suit.

That's a lot of words to say that they're playing off one another very nicely and Braugher's deadpan never fails to crack me up. Fortunately, they have ample chemistry and, somewhat surprisingly, their comedic strengths are kind of harmonizing perfectly.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine really is an ensemble piece, as we've mentioned, but the success of the show rests primarily on our ability to buy into, and invest in, Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher's dynamic. Similarly, the authoritative father/errant son case-of-the-week served as a great backdrop for the evolving Holt/Peralta relationship. It makes sense to spend time getting to know the team when the story itself is about solidifying one. Speaking of unity, last week's episode was all about creating a team (it's why they wear ties!) which actually functioned really well within the structure of an introductory pilot. It wasn't heavy-handed, all that serious, or deep - nor should it have been - but it worked to tie things together and keep the group feeling like a cohesive unit.

Who's to say which? In all seriousness, one of the nice things about the second entry in this freshman series is that there was kind of a thematic through line. I suppose if there were a theme to tonight's Brooklyn Nine-Nine it would be, "Tis better to be punched by the one you love, than duped by a shoe-trafficking psychic" or "Spare the rod, spoil the child." One of the two. Sometimes you need a little tough love, lest you be tried as an adult Highlander.
